Chapter 27

Wendy arrived back at the station at the same time as Paul received the tracking information from the car hire company.

“Wendy, with me, please. We need to go out.”

“Sure, guv, but you might have to buy me a coffee later. Where are we going?”

“I’ll fill you in on the way.”

“Rose Marsden is missing,” Paul explained as Wendy drove them out of the police station car park. “I’ve got a location from the tracker on her car. She is in the Tesco’s car park in Brackford. We need to get there before she leaves.” Luckily, it was only a short distance to the supermarket on the outskirts of Brackford. They may already be too late. Paul’s biggest worry was that Rose may no longer be anywhere near her car.

“How long has she been missing?” Wendy braked as the traffic light ahead turned red.

“Since yesterday afternoon.”

“That’s not even twenty-four hours yet. Why are we even bothering?”

“Because Dylan Bird is also missing. Bird appears to have been staying with Jimmy Torrance, and he now works in the Hale Hill Stores. Now he’s disappeared, and so has Rose. Do you see the urgency now?” He’d never met Bird, but the man had a criminal record and was friends with Jimmy Torrance, so he didn’t trust him one bit. Rose probably had no idea who she was dealing with, which made it all the worse.

Wendy pulled into Tesco’s car park. “What’s the car we’re looking for? We’re never going to find it in here.”

“It’s a white hatchback.” Paul glanced around the huge car park. At least half the cars were white hatchbacks. Rose’s car would be difficult to find. “Let’s start at one end and work our way around methodically.”

It took twenty minutes to find the car. Paul tried all the door handles, but it was locked, with no sign of Rose. The engine still felt warm, so she couldn’t have gone far.

Wendy walked towards him after parking the car.

“Can you watch the supermarket entrance?” Paul said. “Stop them if they try to leave. I’ll watch the car, in case they come back to it. I’ll request some uniformed officers to help do a thorough search of the supermarket and the surrounding area if necessary.” If Rose and Dylan Bird were anywhere in the area, he intended to find them.
